Google CEO Won’t Leave to Become Nation’s First Chief Tech Officer

Posted: 08 Nov 2008 06:15 PM CST

I'm kinda disappointed Google CEO Eric Schmidt really won't be the country's first ever chief tech officer after all. Despite rumors and (fairly reasonable) speculation he was not-so-subtly campaigning for the position (and Obama), yesterday he definitively said that he wouldn't take the position if offered: "I love working at Google and I'm very happy to stay at Google, so the answer is no." His experience and knowledge of all kinds of tech—he's really into green energy, for instance—made him one of my personal favorite choices for the position. And Google mojo is a plug by itself. So who do you want whispering in the president-elect's ear about new solar power technologies, the effect of YouPorn HD on our nation's broadband infrastructure and revamping kids' education to make them more prepared in a world that revolves around bits as much as bullets? Ridiculous Android Bug Reboots Phone Every Time You Type “Reboot”

Posted: 08 Nov 2008 03:15 PM CST

The latest big bug discovered in Android has to be one of the craziest that's shipped with a phone. Basically, Android invisibly interprets every word as a command and executes it with "superuser privileges." If you open up your keyboard and type [return]r-e-b-o-o-t[return], your G1 will, yep, reboot. (It'll do this with any other command too, so stay away from combinations of rm and rf.) The bug affects any phone with firmware version 1.0 TC4-RC29 or earlier. A lot of people should've had already gotten the RC30 update pushed to them (our phone has), but since they go out sorta haphazardly, you could be stuck with it for a little bit. The hilarity potential of rebooting your friend's phone over and over kinda makes this worth it though.[ZDNet]

Popular Science Names 100 “Best of What’s New” Technologies

Posted: 08 Nov 2008 02:30 PM CST

Just last week, Time announced what they considered the 50 most important technological breakthroughs of 2008. Not to be outdone, today Popular Science has named their 100 "Best of What's New." Unlike Time, PopSci has categorized their awards into achievements in Automotive, Aviation & Space, Computing, Engineering, Gadgets (of course!), Green Tech, Home Entertainment, Home Tech, Health, Recreation and Security. But you've had enough of a tease; you just want to see the winners: Automotive 2009 Nissan GT-R BMW MyInfo Carnegie Mellon's Boss BMW 7 Series Sign Reading Camera Audi Harmonic Drive Steering Lexus LX570 Wide-View Cameras Infiniti EX-35 Self-Healing Paint Ford Eco-Boost Engine Honda FCX Clarity Mercedes SL63 Speedshift Ford Capless Fuel Filler Aviation & Space Mars Phoenix Lander White Knight II GeoEye-1 Satellite Kizuna Broadband Satellite Large Binocular Telescope Martin Jetpack Icon A5 Rocket Racing League Boeing Advanced Technical Laser DraganFlyer Pipistrel Taurus Electro Computing Maxis' Spore Device VM SplashTop Adobe AIR Qualcomm Gobi Microsoft PhotoSynth Microsoft Explorer Mouse Phoenix FailSafe Intel Core Duo Merom Engineering Large Hadron Collider Bahrain World Trade Center Hillman Composite Beams Glubam's quick assembly bridge Kajima's new demolition method Gadgets 3M MPro 110 Casio EX-F1 Camera BUG Labs' Base and Modules Eye-Fi Explore SD Card Polaroid ZINK Sleek Audio SA6 Headphones Vision Research's V12 Camera Livescribe Pulse Ugobe Pleo Nikon D90 Samsung AIRAVE iTunes App Store Amazon Kindle Tonium Pacemaker DJ System Green Technology Serious Materials EcoRock ElectraTherm Green Machine Envirofit Clean Indoor Cookstove Enphase Energy Micro-Inverter System Mariah Power Windspire Agroplast All In One System Home Entertainment Sony OLED TV Audiovox FPS10 Subwoofer Lucas Arts' Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Sonos ZP120 Digital Amp Sony BDV-IT1000ES Home Theater System Onkyo TX-NR906 A/V Receiver...

BlackBerry Storm Priced at $200, Delay Caused by Software

Posted: 07 Nov 2008 03:47 PM CST

According to the deep throats at Verizon, we will have to wait a little bit longer to buy the BlackBerry Storm. The original November 14 launch date has been delayed as we'd heard because of a "software glitch." It also looks like it's now headed on direct collision course against the iPhone, specially for businesses: "The price will be no more than $89.99 for companies," with a 2 year contract. Seems like Research In Motion and Verizon are feeling the heat as the iPhone keeps pushing up in the enterprise. But how much would it be for the rest of us and what is the "final" release date? It will be available for $199.99 with a two year contract. For companies the price will be no greater than $89.99, also with a 2 year contract. So there you have it. The Storm is arriving at the end of the month, but I can already smell the napalm in the air. [Thanks tipsters]
